Why did Ixchel emerge?

In Chiapas, inequality in access to medical services affects those without resources. The lack of an intercultural and gender-sensitive approach in the health sector leads to various forms of discrimination and mistreatment.

From 2018 to 2022,

The percentage of the population of Chiapas without access to health services increased from 17.6% to 66.1%.

More than 32% of the Chiapas population is not affiliated with any health institution, which equates to more than 1.8 million people without regular access to medical services.

Factors affecting access to health care in Chiapas

Poor infrastructure

image.png

The health system in Chiapas faces serious deficiencies: staff shortages, lack of equipment, and medical units closed due to structural problems. Many communities are visited only once a month by mobile units, forcing people to travel long distances to receive care.

Racism and discrimination

image.png

The Indigenous population faces systematic discrimination in accessing health services. Studies document how institutional racism contributes to exclusion and unequal treatment in health centers.

Poverty

The percentage of households with catastrophic health expenditures in rural areas is considerably higher than in urban areas. In other words, a family's health-related expenses perpetuate poverty across generations.

In this context of inequality and exclusion, Ixchel: Acompañamiento en Salud emerges as a necessary response.
Our programs seek to:
